Shadows of nature: How NYC artist Acumen captures the beauty of plants

By projecting shadows of plants onto the human body, New York-based tattooist Acumen creates beautiful botanical works of art.

How did your tattooing journey begin?

My tattooing journey began during my adolescence when I started painting and traveling, two passions that I couldn't seem to merge. It wasn't until I discovered tattooing that I found the perfect outlet for my creative expression. I was fortunate to have supportive friends who allowed me to practice on their skin in the early days, and I learned a great deal from experienced tattoo artists along the way.

Can you describe the Secret Door NYC?

Although I haven't been at Secret Door NYC (@thesecretdoornyc) for long, I'm already captivated by the collaborative atmosphere and the sense of artistic community. It's a space where creativity flourishes, and I feel privileged to contribute to it.

As a tattoo artist, what's important to you?

For me, the most important aspect of being a tattoo artist is giving my all to each client. I want them to leave not only happy with their tattoo but also feeling comfortable and cared for throughout the entire experience. I love drawing, both my own ideas and those of my clients. Each tattoo presents a new challenge that keeps me inspired and engaged.

Can you tell us about your work, shadows of nature?

I have a diverse range of styles, but currently I'm particularly drawn to shadow projects. My technique involves capturing the essence and beauty of plants by projecting their shadows onto the skin. I use precise brushwork to trace these shadows, creating tattoos that are true botanical artworks.

What makes this process special is that my clients actively participate in selecting the plants or objects they want to incorporate, making each tattoo a deeply personal experience.

Being in a city such as New York, how do you stay connected to nature?

While living in NYC, I make a point to spend time in natural settings whenever possible, whether it's visiting parks or heading to the beach. Additionally, my art serves as a constant reminder of the beauty of the natural world.

What plans do you have for the future?

Traveling is always a priority for me, and I'm eager to continue learning new skills that bring me closer to nature. As for my work, I'm excited to explore new techniques and styles, always pushing the boundaries of my creativity.

Any final words?

I just want to express my gratitude for this opportunity and encourage everyone to be mindful of the world around us and the impact we have on it.
