Inked Together: Tattoos as Symbols of Love

Friendship tattoos are more than just ink on skin—they’re a symbol of deep connection, shared experiences, and unbreakable bonds.

The beauty of matching tattoos lies in their variety. Some friends choose minimalist symbols—like a tiny heart, an infinity sign, or even a single dot—while others go for intricate designs that tell a story. Some prefer humorous references, like an inside joke or a quote only they understand. Whatever the choice, the tattoo becomes a reminder of moments, laughter, and the unique friendship it represents.

Fredi and Rabea, 31, from Germany, have been friends since they were teens. “We got tattoos shortly after we moved out of our parents' houses. Fredi was living in a shared apartment with three other people and had her bedroom on the floor outside the apartment,” says Rabea.

“We absolutely did not know what to do and where our life was supposed to go from that couch in that apartment, and we also had no idea where we wanted to go and be. So after a while, we thought, if we don't know what to do, then we can use that as a sign and just do a ‘?’ tattoo.”

That simple question mark became a powerful symbol of their journey—one of uncertainty, adventure, and trust.

Fredi says, “The question mark represents our love for searching for answers together and growing through that process. The design is hand-poked (I did the tattoo by hand), which also showed me how much trust Rabea has in me. The hand lettering symbolizes a sense of naturalness, ease, and authenticity—qualities that perfectly describe our friendship.”

Of course, permanence is a big factor. Unlike bracelets or matching jewellery, tattoos are forever (mostly). That’s why choosing the right design and placement is crucial. It should be something meaningful, timeless, and reflective of the friendship, not just a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Rabea says, “Our friendship is special because we’ve grown together and continue to learn new things from each other while supporting one another. We’re both 31 now and have been friends since we were about 14 or 15 – so quite a long time! I think a good, close friendship evolves over the years, but a certain stable bond always remains. I’d say that, in the beginning, different things may have connected us compared to today, but the connection between us hasn’t changed at all.”

Matching friendship tattoos are a meaningful way to celebrate a bond that stands the test of time. Whether small and subtle or bold and intricate, they’re a lifelong reminder of the love and loyalty shared between friends.
